How can we remember some of the darkest and transformative times in history, and do so in a game? What makes a democracy strong, and how can we engage with the past and present, especially in a video game? How can developers tackle difficult topics in their games?
We'll be exploring these questions and more in the next Gamecity Impulse panel discussion. On the panel: Markus Bassermann, project manager and coordinator of the serious game “Erinnern. Die Kinder vom Bullenhuser Damm” (Remember. The Children of Bullenhuser Damm) about confronting the past in relation to one's own experience of the present; Jörg Friedrich, Game Director at Paintbucket Games (Through the Darkest of Time, The Darkest Files); Dr. Tabea Widmann, Consultant for digital communication and format development at the Zeppelin Museum, Friedrichshafen. She was co-project lead for the culture of remembrance at the Digital Games Culture Foundation’s “Let’s Remember” project and holds a doctorate in digital memory media and medialized witnessing.
The panel will focus on the current relevance of games as part of democracy education and remembrance culture and take a look at the possibilities for game development in this context.
